VDI and Session Virtualisation

The Virtue approach

Virtualisation is a fast-maturing technology that delivers significant cost savings and environmental benefit if implemented correctly. However, there are a number of approaches that need to be considered by any academic organisation that is looking to implement virtualisation, and it is in this area that Virtue can help.

We recognise that virtualisation is not a one-size-fits-all solution. That is why we take the time to understand your objectives, budgets and existing constraints. This then allows us to propose a solution that uses the best technology to meet your precise needs and budget.

Because we have partnered with all the leading virtualisation manufacturers, we have a wide and deep understanding of which solution is the correct one for different circumstances.

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)

VDI is where the user’s desktop operating system is hosted on a virtual machine, running on a centralised server. As it typically means less physical servers it provides cost benefits as well as reduced environmental impact because of the need for less resources and power.

We can design, implement and support VDI solutions from all the leading manufacturers, including: Microsoft, VMware and Citrix. As well as cost and environmental benefits a VDI also:

  • Improves student and staff flexibility and efficiency – they will be able to access their desktop environment from many different types of device and in multiple locations.
  • Increased resilience - if the user’s device fails, their desktop will continue to run on the central server, enabling them to reconnect from a different device/location.
  • Enhanced security – all important data is stored centrally, rather than locally making data restoration easier and faster

Session Virtualisation (Remote Desktop)

Remote Desktop Services (RDS) from Microsoft (previously known as Terminal Services), allows users to access individual applications (RemoteApp programs) or entire desktops (remote desktops or “sessions”) running on a centrally located server. It is a reliable and mature technology that is simple to implement and is a relatively inexpensive way of achieving the benefits of virtualisation.

Irrespective of your requirement, we will be able to advise which route is the best for your establishment, allowing you to enjoy the lower costs and reduced environmental impact that virtualisation provides.
