High School Becomes More Productive and Saves Thousand

Due to the rising costs of replacing their PC's every three years, St. Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic High School realised they had to find a more affordable alternative. The high school, with approximately 1200 students and over 120 staff, decided thin clients are a better fit for their needs and their budget. “Now is the time as thin clients are capable of doing the vast majority of the tasks that a fat client computer can do,” says Paul Roby, ICT Innovation Manager, St. Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic High School.

Paul reviewed many thin client options, but 10ZiG rose above the pack. 10ZiG thin clients met all of their requirements including support for RDP 7, quick boot up time, and an excellent multi-media experience. Paul Roby comments, “10ZiG Thin Clients were better for doing video playback and CAD CAM. None of the others could playback video as smooth and render images quite as good.”

Prior to the implementation they were spending approximately £70,000 per year for desktop refreshes. The cost savings that the school will see is abundant. They estimate they will save approximately £350,000 over 5 years. This includes about a £10,000 savings per year on energy consumption.

Cost saving isn’t the only significant benefit that the school has found since implementing their thin clients. Before thin clients, it took about 10-15 minutes to access work by the time students and staff would log on and be able to open an application. “The impact on teaching and learning was suffering due to the amount of time it took to log on,” says Paul Roby. “The impact on teaching has been unbelievable. If the thin clients are turned on it takes about 20 seconds to start the work. We’re getting about 15-20 minutes extra alesson!”

The RBT-616 thin clients are mounted on the back of monitors in the school’s labs, freeing up valuable desktop space. The units have no moving parts and are silent, which issomething the students and staff can appreciate. “What a massive impact! Thirty computers in a lab would be very noisy and it is now a much more pleasant environment,” comments Mr. Roby. “Because the units run cool, there’s no need for air conditioning anymore which also saves money. ”Installation was a breeze for the three IT staff at St. Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic High School. “It was faultless. We literally just plugged them in, put an image on them and it took. No time at all,” comments Paul Roby. “It has been one of the best technical support experiences. I think that’s one of the key things with a company, more than the product, is the support. The support has been second to none. It has been absolutely outstanding!”

The Challenge

The impact on teaching and learning was suffering due to the amount of time it took to log on. In addition, the cost for refreshing old PC's was escalating.

The Solution

10ZiG Thin Clients boot up in seconds allowing for more productive time in the classroom. The school saves money because thin clients last longer and the units are energy efficient.

The Benefits

Over £350,000 expected to be saved over the next five years

The impact on teaching has been unbelievable. If the thin clients are turned on it takes about 20 seconds to start the work. We’re getting about 15-20 minutes extra a lesson!

The support has been second to none. It has been absolutely outstanding
